Curacao: The Island
We ventured off property to see the island and go swimming with sea turtles. Along the way, we stopped to watch flamingo’s in their natural habitat. Such a peaceful site. Soon after, we reached our destination, Playa Grandi, a picturesque beach nestled on the island’s western coast. It’s renowned for its resident sea turtle population. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with scenic coastal roads, rich in history. Our guides filled us with information, that we may otherwise, never have known.
As we arrived at Playa Grandi, the sight of crystal-clear waters and the scent of salt in the air filled us with anticipation. What makes this place truly special is the local fishermen who clean their catch right on the dock, tossing fish scraps into the water. This attracts the sea turtles, and that’s why they often make an appearance here.

We were provided snorkeling gear and carefully waded into the turquoise waters. The water was warm, and the visibility was fantastic. Within moments, I spotted the first turtle gracefully gliding beneath the surface. It was surreal to watch these gentle giants in their natural habitat. We swam alongside the turtles, giving them plenty of space and respecting their environment. Observing them munch on the fish scraps was mesmerizing. Their slow, deliberate movements and the wise look in their eyes made it clear why they’re often considered symbols of longevity and wisdom. After our swim, we moved to beautiful Grote Knip Beach, where we enjoyed smoothies and watched a wild pig swim in the beach water. I was told this pig’s visit is not normal and must have been a “runaway”. A day I will never forget!
During our stay, we also managed to sneak in a shopping trip to the capital Willemstad, where the famous colored buildings sat perched against the ocean waters. Cafes and shopping lined the park like setting.
