My journey through Costa Rica, with its natural wonders, hot springs, cloud forests, and the surreal beauty of Rio Celeste, was an incredible experience.  As I departed for home, I couldn’t help but reflect on the amazing memories I had created during this trip. Costa Rica had left a lasting impression, and I knew I would be back to explore more of its treasures in the future.
Arrival into Central America

My recent trip to Costa Rica was an adventure of a lifetime, filled with stunning natural beauty and unforgettable experiences.  After arriving late afternoon, our first night stay was at the Hotel Bougainvillea in Santo Domingo.  This property was just outside of San Jose and was a welcome site after a full day of travel.  After a wonderful breakfast the next morning, we headed outside to their private 10 acres of lush gardens.  This was indeed a prerequisite for what lie ahead.

Exploring the Peace Lodge

Our private driver, Rudy, was there to pick us up and take us on to our journey to La Fortuna.  Although we didn’t stay overnight, we had the opportunity to explore the Peace Lodge and all of the natural beauty and wildlife that this eco-lodge is known for.  The Peace Lodge is nestled deep within the lush rainforests of Costa Rica. The first thing that struck me was the serene and tranquil atmosphere, as we were greeted by the soothing sounds of the rainforest and the chirping of exotic birds.

We started our visit with a guided wildlife tour, and it was nothing short of amazing. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the local flora and fauna, which made the experience even more enriching. We ventured along well-maintained trails that wound through the rainforest, providing us with opportunities to spot a wide variety of wildlife. From colorful tropical birds to playful monkeys swinging through the trees, I felt like I was in a wildlife documentary.

The Peace Lodge also boasts a stunning butterfly observatory, where I marveled at the delicate beauty of these winged creatures. The gardens surrounding the lodge were a feast for the eyes, with vibrant flowers, cascading waterfalls, and koi-filled ponds.  I spent some time just relaxing and taking in the serene ambiance of the lodge.

Lunch at the lodge’s restaurant was a delightful culinary experience. The menu featured fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and I savored delicious Costa Rican cuisine while overlooking the rainforest. It was the perfect way to recharge for more adventures.

Adventures in and near LaFortuna

As we approached La Fortuna, seeing Arenal Volcano was a true highlight.  It stood tall and proud as it was the focal point for entire town that surrounds it.

All of our hotel stays were great but one stood out more than the others.  Tabacon Thermal Resort, known for its luxurious accommodations and rejuvenating hot springs. Nestled against the backdrop of the majestic Arenal Volcano, the resort was a true paradise.  We immersed ourselves in the natural thermal pools, surrounded by lush tropical foliage. The therapeutic waters and serene ambiance made it the perfect place to relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.  Perfect after a full day of hiking.

Another highlight was our visit to Mistico Park.  This cloud forest reserve offered an incredible experience, with its suspension bridges that allowed us to walk above the treetops. The view of the pristine rainforest canopy was mesmerizing, and I had the chance to spot various bird species and an array of plants and creatures. It was a true adventure into the heart of Costa Rica’s biodiversity.

Our journey then led us to the enchanting Rio Celeste, a natural wonder known for its vivid blue waters.  We embarked on a day trip to the Tenorio Volcano National Park to witness this magical sight. The hike was both challenging and rewarding, leading us through the lush rainforest to the point where two rivers converge, creating the captivating blue hue that gives Rio Celeste its name.

As our Costa Rican adventure drew to a close, we made our way back to San Jose for our final night before the flight home. The capital city offered a perfect blend of culture, history, and great dining options. We took the opportunity to explore the city’s vibrant markets and enjoy a delicious meal at a local restaurant, savoring the flavors of Costa Rican cuisine.
